Understanding how the brain functions plays such a monumental role in learning. Often a student’s awareness of the ways their brain is functioning aids in the student developing learning techniques that work for them.
Working for 30+ years with adolescents, while assisting them in the subject matter of mathematics, chemistry, physics, career planning, and study skill development, I honed my skill to identify potential learning barriers. The effect of mental illness, self-medicating, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, executive functioning difficulty, and general learning impediments is not often considered in students who are able to maintain at a barely below satisfactory to satisfactory level of performance.
Focusing on these students, I identify behaviors that can be discussed and strategies developed for the students to be more successful. Strategies such as visualization exercises and connecting content to students' interests are a couple. Developing an academic socio-emotional plan, assists in the overcoming of those barriers.
I began my career as an educator very early in life. I worked for my local school district in Colorado as a phone tutor. That is a whole other story. Also, I was privately tutoring in-person, both of jobs starting in 1983 at the age of 17.

I began my career as an educator very early in life. I worked for my local school district in Colorado as a phone tutor. That is a whole other story. Also, I was privately tutoring in-person, both of jobs starting in 1983 at the age of 17.
My next educational experiences were tutoring all through college both by phone and in-person for clients, fellow students, the Mathematics Department, Upward Bound and lots of friends. I also started teaching religious education classes.
After college, I proceeded towards Georgia, family was there, and started substitute teaching. Looking for a more permanent position, I found a private college preparatory program for struggling above average intelligence adolescents ages 12 - 22 and their families.
Working there for 14 years, I took on numerous roles, projects, and assignments. From the role of Teacher and Dorm-parent to Dean of Students, Principal, Dormitory Supervisor, Campus Life Director, Off-site Program Supervisor, Director of Recruitment, Training & IEPs, Assistant to the Executive Director, and finally the Director of "Doing". Whatever needed to get done, Greg would do it.
As I progressed in my professional career, professional development and working towards my Master's Degree of Education was one of my most important requirements with any advancement and for my colleagues. It was crucial for all the staff to learn about how these students behaved and learn to be more effective educators.
These students faced issues such as: ADD/ADHD, depression, anxiety, attachment disorders, eating disorders, self-harm disorders, addictions, obsessive compulsive disorders, self medicating, dyslexia, being on the spectrum for autism, physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, bipolar disorders, executive decision making, reading disorders, general learning difficulties, other psychiatric disorders, and overall mental health issues.
Wow! What an experience. I enjoyed it but was tired by the intensity. Staff lived in campus housing, worked many weekends, and many holidays. It was time to move on.
Moving to Texas was a big move after so many years. I came to The Woodlands area to work for an entertainment company as the Director of Education. It was for a children's hip-hop group ages 8 - 16. This too was a whole different experience. My job was to oversee their educational and residential needs when performing. The educational component also included facilitating any educational programing being done by the group for the audiences.
Well, the entertainment business can be difficult for a kids group to break through but, what new and interesting experiences. Missing the classroom, I decided to substitute for Conroe Independent School District. After the first semester, I was asked to stay on. I worked for the district for another 9 years teaching mathematics. My courses were from remediation mathematics to Pre-Calculus and College Readiness. While with the district, I developed, assisted, and/or conducted numerous workshops for staff throughout the district in crisis intervention, college readiness, and some other staff development projects. Throughout, I worked privately with students tutoring and in curriculum development for homeschooling.
My career was filled with such a rich diversity of experience. What would be my next step?

In 2014, I started Metamorphic Educational Resources, LLC. I wanted to be able to use all my skills. The standard classroom can be limiting for everyone in the educational process. It is hard to teach many learners with many different needs at many different levels.
With that frustration, some learners get lost. I like to find them and the ones who just need a little more support or direction to break through their barriers. Watching these types of learners grow is the biggest thrill. Seeing that development, WOW!
Working individually with students is good but teaching a group is a lot of fun and I was missing it. Teaching at Lone Star College seemed the solution. As an instructor of a math support course and a freshman success course, I am able to use my skills to help students be more successful in college. Many have appreciated the guidance and direction I provide.
The Mission of Metamorphic Educational Resources, LLC is to provide quality educational supports for all learners. Learners are both students and parents. They are young and old.
Finding ways learners can identify and reduce the barriers in their lives and/or conquer them, is crucial for the development of a whole person. A healthy mind learns more effectively. I love sharing about learning and the learning process. Growth is what is important but, can not be forced. Progress not perfection leads to true development of mind, spirit, and body.
